McLaren Kuala Lumpur has officially introduced the McLaren 720S Spider, the Super Series offering making its local debut eight months after its global reveal.

The car is the convertible version of the 720S Coupe, and design-wise differs from the coupe with its retractable hardtop, powered rear window and new buttresses. Under the skin, there’s a Monocage II-S carbon-fibre structure, a development of the coupe’s Monocage II, without the central ‘spine’ running front to rear above the cabin.

The car’s underfloor aerodynamics have also been revised to ensure it is compatible with the new rear bodywork and full-width active rear spoiler, which gets a different deployment mapping compared to the coupe.

The retractable hard top features a one-piece, carbon fibre roof panel as standard, and an electrical folding mechanism allows the top to be lowered or raised in just 11 seconds, which is six seconds quicker than that on the 650S Spider.

It can also be deployed at speeds of up to 50 km/h, up from the 30 km/h previously on the 650S, and is also twice as quiet in operation as the first-generation Super Series convertible.

The Spider has a dry weight of 1,322 kg, which is 49 kg (or four percent) heavier than the coupe, the additional weight primarily due to the new retractable hard top and tonneau system. The company says despite this, the car is still 88 kg lighter than its closest competitor, which happens to be the Ferrari 488 Spider.

The Spider features the same powertrain as the coupe, in this case a M840T 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 offering an identical 720 PS and 770 Nm output.

With power sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch SSG transmission, the Spider is able to do the 0-100 km/h sprint in 2.9 seconds and a 341 km/h top speed, again similar to the coupe. It’s slightly slower with the roof lowered, but will still do 325 km/h.

Interior kit includes a centrally-mounted 8.0-inch high-resolution Central Infotainment Screen, which controls audio, media, navigation, climate control and other convenience features. The dual-zone climate control and air conditioning system has been recalibrated for the convertible, and offers different operational aspects depending on the top’s position.

The Spider sits on a twin five-spoke lightweight forged alloy wheel designed for the car, wrapped with 19-inch 245/35 front and 20-inch 305/30 rear Pirelli P Zero tyre.

The Spider is available in the same three specifications (standard, Performance and Luxury trims) as the coupe. A total of 23 exterior colours are available for the car, two – Belize Blue and Aztec Gold – being new for the convertible.

The launch vehicle is finished in Memphis Red, a shade that will be limited to three examples here. Finally, pricing, and the 720S Spider is priced from RM1.218 million, before duties and options.
