Pulpit Rock is a glacial rock formation 604m above Lysefjord. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Norway which is why so many people hike up for stunning views of the fjord. The trek to the summit of Preikestolen is unguided and has a clearly marked path, but before you begin the hike, you need a simple way to get there.
The excursion begins at Stavanger and takes you to Tau by boat. From here, you will take the bus to Preikestolen Parking which is where you will begin your hike. Once you have arrived at Preikestolen, you can climb to the top of Pulpit Rock at your leisure. The hike ascends by 350m and is fairly demanding but the breathtaking views from the top make the uphill climb worthwhile. We want to make your journey to the start of the hike as simple as possible which is why we offer both the boat crossing and the bus transfer which takes you right to the start of your hike.
The bus will drop you off and pick you up from Preikestolen Parking which is where you will begin and end your tour. So leave the travelling to us and you can focus on conquering Pulpit Rock.
Tour times
There are a number of departures from Stavanger throughout the day, and plenty of return journeys from Preikestolen, so you’re sure to find a journey time to suit you. There are also additional bus and ferry departures which operate from 1st June to 31st August. When you are planning which ferry and bus to take towards Pulpit Rock, don’t forget to account for how long the hike will take so you can make it back in time for your return journey.
【N.B.】Please note that this bus operates on a first come first serve basis. If the bus is full you will have to wait for the next departure. We cannot guarantee you a seat on the bus. In cases where you need to catch a cruise departure or similar, it is your responsibility to make sure you leave enough time to get back to Stavanger.

There are various departure times from Stavanger to Tau and Tau to Preikestolen throughout the season and the same applies for return journeys. Between 1st June to 31st August, additional bus and ferry services will operate.
The best way to plan your journey is by viewing our timetable and printing a copy or taking a screenshot of the timetable so you have all journey times to hand whilst on your trip.

Stavanger
Spend some time in Stavanger before and/or after your trip to Preikestolen. Stavanger is the 4th biggest city in Norway and there is plenty to see and do. Experience unique museums, colourful buildings, quaint streets, Stavanger Cathedral and the market if you have more time in the city. There are also lots of shops and supermarkets so stock up on food, drink and any extra layers you may need before your hike.

The hike from the starting point by Preikestolen Mountain Lodge to Preikestolen is one of Norway’s most popular hikes. The goal is of course Preikestolen with its unique rockformation. However, the hike to and from Preikestolen is also beautiful as you walk through gorgeous Western Norwegian forest terrain.

Shaped by glaciers and steep mountain ranges, the Lysefjord is truly remarkable. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes this 42km fjord is worth exploring. For breathtaking views across the fjord, hiking to Kjerag and Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) are very popular. Cruise tours on the fjord provides a more gentle yet memorbale way to admire the scenery.

Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) is one of the most famous tourist attractions in all of Norway. It towers an impressive 604 metres above the Lysefjord and is a destination that people across the world have on their ‘bucket list’. It’s not hard to see why. It is also worth mentioning that it had a starring role in the Tom Cruise movie ‘Mission Impossible – Fallout’.

Please note that there are no toilet facilities during the hike to Pulpit Rock.
What to wear
It is essential that you should dress in comfortable walking gear and also pack additional layers so you are prepared for any changes in the weather. You will need to be well prepared for hiking in Norway no matter what time of year you are travelling, so here are the basic essentials:
- Hiking shoes (the rocky terrain can be slippery)
- Lightweight jacket and trousers that are waterproof and windproof
- Additional layers (fleece, socks etc.)
- Hat, scarf & gloves (weather dependent)
- Backpack to carry your food and drink
Before you set off for your hike, make sure you check the weather forecast so you can dress appropriately as you may need sunscreen on a sunny day or extra warm layers if it is colder.
Most importantly, bad weather can make your hike even riskier. If the weather starts to change on your ascent, you may want to start heading straight back to Preikestolen Mountain Lodge rather than compromising your safety.
Where to eat/buy food & drink
There is a restaurant and cafe in Preikestolen Mountain Lodge which is great for a bite to eat before and after your trip, but you will need to take a packed lunch with you as well. The hike can take 4-6 hours, depending on how physically fit you are and how fast you walk. However, the weather can change quickly so you need to make sure you have enough food and drinks to sustain you in case the hike takes longer. In which case, there are lots of supermarkets close to Stavanger where your tour departs from, including Organic Grocery AS and KIWI Magasin Blå, which are both within a 5-minute walk of the departure point.
Additional information
The hike to Pulpit Rock is unguided and taken at your own risk. It is around 8km long over hilly terrain and is well marked.
