Omega doesn’t need an anniversary to celebrate its status as the first watch to be worn on the moon. Fans of the brand eagerly await every new moon edition that celebrates the 1969 Apollo 11 mission. But this year – the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing – is particularly resonant. To commemorate the occasion, Omega is launching an all-gold Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition timepiece. It is inspired not by the model that actually went to the moon by one that was gifted to the astronauts at a celebration dinner following the moon landing. It was 18k gold with a rare burgundy bezel and an inscription on the caseback: “to mark man’s conquest of space with time, through time, on time.” It was made in a limited edition of 1,014 pieces.

Edition number 1 was presented to President Richard Nixon, and number 2 to Vice President Spiro Agnew. (Both were returned to Omega because of the government’s strict gifting protocol). Numbers 3-28 were given to NASA astronauts. Numbers 29 to 32 were offered to Swiss watch industry leaders and politicians, and numbers 33-1,000 were sold to the general public. Numbers 1,001 to 1,014 were given to astronauts of later missions or “other personalities,” according to Omega.
